RI CONTRACT NO. 2013DF109 – ATWELLS AVENUE BRIDGE NO. 975 REPLACEMENT

Overview: The Atwells Avenue Bridge spans the Woonasquatucket River and serves as a vital link fromProvidence’s west end to the downtown area. The bridge is actually comprised of three different structures: one vehicular bridge and two pedestrian bridges (one located at either side). The vehicular bridge is a 44’ simple span structure; the pedestrian bridges, supported by trusses fabricated in the 1890s, were designated historical by Rhode Island Historical Society. All three structures sustained substantial damage from Superstorm Sandy in late October, 2012 and were deemed inadequate by RIDOT. John Rocchio Corporation was awarded the contract to remove and replace the vehicular bridge and both pedestrian bridges utilizing the restored existing trusses.

Work: The work consists of demolition of the vehicular superstructure, two pedestrian bridges while temporarily supporting existing utilities (gas, water, communication, cable, electric), refurbish and rehabilitate four historic trusses, construct new vehicular superstructure and two pedestrian spans.

Cost At Completion: $2,471,072
